Open source software has become a strategic option for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) operating in electronic commerce in the province of Santa Elena, Ecuador. This alternative has facilitated the reduction of costs related to traditional software licenses, enhancing its competitiveness in a constantly evolving digital environment. In addition, open source solutions stand out for their ability to adapt to the specific needs of each business, allowing tools such as inventory management systems and secure payment gateways to be customized. Despite their benefits, such as the support of a global community and regular updates, SMEs face significant challenges, including a lack of trained personnel and technical knowledge to implement and manage these tools. However, platforms such as WordPress, WooCommerce and PrestaShop have proven to be accessible and functional options for this sector. In 2024, there is an increase in the adoption of these technologies, driven by growing digitalization after the pandemic. This change is transforming local commerce, allowing companies to expand their reach, offer a better experience to customers and optimize processes, contributing significantly to the economic development of the region.
