Fire behavior in controlled burns for land clearing in the Andil community, Manabí, Ecuador

Controlled burns are widely used to clear land for the planting of agricultural crops; however, fire behavior during their execution has not been sufficiently documented. The objective of this work was to evaluate fire behavior in controlled burns for land clearing in the Andil community, Manabí, Ecuador. The research was developed using a non-experimental cross-sectional design. Ten plots with fuels stacked on rows and 5 on dispersed fuels were delimited. Fuel variables were measured before the burn and meteorological variables, as well as fire behavior parameters, were measured during the burn. Statistical analysis was performed in SPSS with a significance of 0.05. The mean values of dry weight, fuel thickness, flame height and heat released per unit area were statistically equal in both types of plots. However, there were significant differences in fire spread speed (0.021 and 0.007 m.s-1), linear intensity (109.36 and 40.27 kcal.m-1.s-1) and lethal drying height (7.31 and 2.81 m), being higher in plots located in fuel rows. A high correlation was observed between fuel dry weight and heat released per unit area. The results suggest that reducing fuel dry weight also reduces the values of several fire behavior parameters, a finding that may help in decision-making regarding the regulation of fire use for land clearing.
