Abstract

Musculoskeletal pain and sleep disturbances are common problems among university students, but their potential correlations have not been explored in Ecuador. This cross-sectional study included 130 physical therapy students from different semesters, using the Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index as validated instruments. Data were collected through online surveys and statistically analyzed to identify associations between variables. The results showed an average musculoskeletal pain score of 14.5 ± 12.7, corresponding to a mild level, and a sleep quality score of 9.7 ± 4.9, categorized as primary insomnia. A weak positive correlation was found (Rho = 0.174; p < 0.05), suggesting that greater pain is associated with a higher likelihood of sleep disturbances. No significant differences were found in relation to gender, age, or academic level. It is concluded that musculoskeletal pain negatively affects sleep quality in physiotherapy students, with implications for their well-being and academic performance. Further research into this relationship is recommended, along with the design of intervention strategies that promote overall health and quality of life within the university setting.
