Abstract

The cholinesterase is a biomarker used to evaluate pesticide exposure in farmers. In this regard allowing the identification of possible health risks and the development of appropriate protection strategies. Given the background the cholinesterase values in blood serum were analyzed as an epidemiological surveillance as a tool in farmers of the pitahaya pickers Association in the Palora Canton Laboratory in 2022. A quantitative and explanatory approach was used with a retrospective transversal design. The socialization to participants and anonymization of information with a population composed of associated farmers (n=115) who work as fumigators and a population sample of 89. The results showed that 82% of the farmers had normal levels of cholinesterase at the same time 18% had low levels which could indicate inhibition of enzymatic activity due to exposure to pesticides. In conclusion some factors such as gender, exposure time, use of protective equipment and poor training can influence cholinesterase levels in exposed farmers. Of consequence to continue monitoring these levels to protect the health of agricultural workers.
