Seroprevalence of anti-Tg and anti-TPO antibodies in apparently healthy adults from a religious institution in Ambato

Abstract

Thyroid disorders affect approximately 10% of the global population, and their early diagnosis remains challenging due to the presence of nonspecific symptoms that contribute to underdiagnosis. The aim of this study was to detect thyroid disorders through the determination of antithyroglobulin (anti-Tg) and antithyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) antibodies in apparently healthy adults aged 20 to 50 years from a religious institution in Ambato. A cross-sectional, descriptive, and observational study was conducted involving 50 participants of both sexes with no previous diagnosis of thyroid disease.  The descriptive results showed that 18% of the participants tested positive for antithyroid antibodies; within this group, 55.6% showed positivity for both antibodies, 33.3% only for anti-TPO, and 11.1% only for anti-Tg. Likewise, female sex predominated among participants with serological positivity. In conclusion, a significant proportion of apparently healthy individuals presented antithyroid antibodies, indicating the presence of thyroid autoantibodies whose clinical significance requires further evaluation through hormonal profiling and longitudinal follow-up.
