Abstract

Objective: To evaluate homocysteine levels as a predictive biomarker for cardiovascular disease in young adult patients. Methodology: Homocysteine (Hcy) concentrations were studied in a sample of 40 individuals aged 18 to 40 years who were patients at the Koch Medical Center in the city of Manta. A questionnaire-based data collection tool known as "Helena" was administered. Homocysteine was analyzed using an enzyme immunoassay technique. Statistical analysis involved calculating absolute frequencies and percentages to determine cardiovascular risk and risk factors; for Hcy analysis, the mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and a regression model were calculated. Results: The mean Hcy concentration for the population was 7.16 ± 0.83 µmol/L; it was 6.80 ± 0.61 µmol/L for females and 7.83 ± 0.82 µmol/L for males. Analysis of the variables of age (p = 0.072) and sex (p < 0.001) revealed that, among men, Hcy values showed a slight progressive trend as the age range increased. Regarding conventional factors and risk, moderate risk associated with poor diet, lack of rest, physical activity levels, and hypertension was notable among males. Conclusions: In the studied population, Hcy was not associated with cardiovascular risk; however, it showed an increasing trend with age among males.
