Biochemistry as a cross-cutting axis in the training of nursing graduates

Biochemistry is a fundamental axis in the training of nursing students, as it provides the scientific basis to understand cellular and metabolic processes that sustain life and explain the origin of diseases. Despite its relevance, students often face difficulties in recognizing its utility and linking it with other basic courses. The objective of this study was to analyze the pertinence and perception of Biochemistry in the Nursing program at the Universidad Estatal del Sur de Manabí (UNESUM), considering its interdisciplinary articulation and its role in understanding cellular metabolism and ATP production. The research was conducted under a quantitative, exploratory-descriptive, and retrospective approach. The population consisted of 136 students, from which a representative sample of 119 was selected. A structured questionnaire was applied, including Likert-type items and open-ended questions to assess perceptions and gather qualitative insights. Results revealed that, although students acknowledged the importance of Biochemistry as an essential subject, limitations persisted in its clinical application and in its integration with Biosecurity, Morphophysiology, and Basic Nursing. It is concluded that innovative pedagogical strategies are required to strengthen the connection between biochemical theory and professional practice, thereby enhancing scientific and clinical competencies within the framework of the Nursing Care Process (PAE).
