Abstract

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic disease of autoimmune nature that, thanks to advances in the understanding of immune and inflammatory mechanisms, has driven the development of therapies that offer new hope to patients suffering from incurable diseases, in which current therapeutic approaches focus on symptom control and not on curing the disease. The objective of this research is to carry out a bibliographic review on the application of cell therapy in the treatment of chronic and degenerative lesions in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis, through a critical analysis of current and high-impact evidence to infer a better therapeutic approach in our setting. A bibliographic review of the existing scientific literature was carried out regarding the application of cell therapy in the treatment of chronic and degenerative lesions in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis. In medical bibliography databases: PubMed, The New England Journal of Medicine, Scopus, Elsevier´s ScienceDirect, Directory of Open Access Journals. Science Direct, Mendeline, Cochranre and Scielo that support the information and allow the fulfillment of the objectives set. Considered as a new innovative treatment strategy, cell therapy takes advantage of its special characteristics of renewing and differentiating, to regenerate damaged tissues and cells of the human body. The types of cells used in cell therapy protocols depend on the clinical purpose that is intended to be given to them. MSCs are stem cells with the ability to perform immunosuppressive functions in the cells of the immune system, both innate and adaptive. According to these clinical trials, mesenchymal stem cell therapy may be suitable for patients with RA, safely and effectively reducing joint pain and swelling as well as improving joint function.
