Percieved stress and the nutritional status of adolescents

Abstract

The objective of the present study is to determine the relationship between perceived stress and the nutritional status of adolescents who attend the High School Nuevo Mundo placed in Ambato in the year of 2021. The study was a Cross-sectional, descriptive correlational, observational with a quantitative approach with a sample of 188 adolescents between 14 and 18 years old. The PSS-14 perceived stress survey and an anthropometric evaluation for taking weight and height were applied to each participant. According to the general characteristics of the studied population, of 51% belonging to the female sex, 29% has a state of malnutrition and of the 49% corresponding to the male sex, 29% are in the same way with alterations in their nutritional status. Of the 29.2% of patients who present malnutrition, 27.6% have some degree of stress in contrast to 6.9% of adolescents without stress and of whom only 1.6% have alterations in their nutritional status. In the present study, a statistically significant relationship between perceived stress and nutritional status was not demonstrated (p=0,131). Future research is recommended to allow the use of laboratory tests for greater validity.
