Prevalence of urinary tract infections and risk factors in school-age children

A urinary tract infection is defined as a microbial infiltration of the urinary tract, the prevalence of urinary tract infections and associated risk factors in school-aged children are important epidemiological issues that require comprehensive consideration, identifying and controlling risk factors, such as sex, infrequency of urination, and anatomical abnormalities, is crucial to reduce the frequency of the disease in the population of children, the main objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of urinary tract infections and associated risk factors in school-age children, whose methodology was documentary and descriptive, which implies collecting information in an organized manner. Among the most relevant results is that in Peru the figures range up to 85%, followed by Iran with 62%, Ecuador with 20-55%. Among the most important risk factors were vesicoureteral reflux, malformations in the urinary system, sex, and maternal history of infection. Among the most common etiologic agents documented in the present study were Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. It was concluded that the prevalence of urinary tract infections in school-age children exhibits significant influenced variations, maternal history of infection, hospitalization, previous use of antibiotics and previous experiences of urinary tract infections were the main risk factors. Escherichia coli is the most common cause of urinary tract infection, followed by Klebsiella.
