Systemic lupus erythematosus: prevalence, complications and diagnostic tests

Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease of unknown cause, characterized by an alteration of the immune response and consequent production of autoantibodies directed at cellular antigens. The Ecuadorian Ministry of Public Health indicates that this disease is more prevalent in women in a 10:1 ratio compared to men. The objective of the research was to determine the prevalence, complications and diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus. The methodology used was a bibliographic review, of a descriptive type and documentary design, in which the MeSH and Boolean terms were used. The results highlight that the average prevalence of systemic lupus erythematosus is 55.80%. The most common complications are strokes, preeclampsia, preterm pregnancy and premature birth. Regarding diagnostic tests, they are performed by ELISA and PCR. This leads to the conclusion that cases of lupus are relatively high, especially in women, making complications more common during pregnancy.
