Bermúdez Technique: a surgical innovation in Inguinal Hernias that impacts on the reduction of recurrences and postoperative complications

Abstract

Inguinal hernias are one of the most common surgical pathologies, with high rates of recurrence and postoperative complications, which drives the search for more effective surgical techniques. This study was conducted at Bermúdez Clinic, located in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, Ecuador, with the aim of evaluating the effectiveness of the new Bermúdez surgical technique in reducing recurrences and postoperative complications. The methodology was quantitative, with a non-experimental, cross-sectional, and retrospective design. Medical records of 99 patients operated on between 2000 and January 2024 were reviewed. These patients were treated with the Bermúdez surgical technique and were followed up for three months and one year after surgery. The results showed that none of the patients experienced recurrences or significant postoperative complications, demonstrating the effectiveness of the procedure. Compared to other conventional techniques, such as the Lichtenstein hernioplasty, the Bermúdez technique significantly reduced typical complications such as infections, hematomas, seromas, and neuritic pain, which is common in this type of surgery. The Bermúdez surgical technique is not only effective in reducing complications and recurrences but also optimizes the use of hospital resources, benefiting both patients and the healthcare system.
