Abstract

SARS-CoV-2 infection has been associated with an increased risk of thrombotic events, which can result in serious complications. D-dimer is a protein fragment that is released into the blood when a clot forms. Recent studies suggest that deaths from SARS-CoV-2 are often linked to the presence of coagulopathies, and that a D-dimer value greater than 1 µg/ml is associated with an increase in mortality. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine D-dimer as a predictive factor for thrombotic events in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection at the Union Clinic, Guayaquil City. For which a methodology with a quantitative, descriptive, retrospective observational approach was used, it included 298 patients treated at the Union Clinic in a set time, of which 49.3% had the infection. In this group, 45.3% showed elevated D-dimer values. In addition, 89 cases of thrombotic events were recorded, with deep vein thrombosis being the most frequent, with 37 cases. In the non-infected population, only one case of elevated D-dimer was documented. Finally, it was concluded that there is an increased risk of presenting some type of thrombosis, when there is a history of Sars-CoV-2 infection and D-dimer values are above the normal limit, that is, the higher the concentration of this biomarker in the blood, the greater the predisposition to develop a thrombotic event.
