Abstract

Complementary feeding is a crucial stage to meet the nutritional needs of infants starting at 6 months of age. This article reviews recent evidence on best practices for its introduction, aiming to identify updated recommendations that promote adequate nutrition in early childhood. An exhaustive search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and SciELO databases, selecting 25 relevant articles for analysis. The evidence highlights that early inclusion of foods rich in iron, zinc and other essential nutrients promotes optimal development and prevents nutritional deficiencies. In addition, debate has been generated around key issues, such as the ideal age to initiate complementary feeding, the prevention of food allergies and the adoption of novel methods such as Baby-Led Weaning. Despite advances in international guidelines, Ecuadorian recommendations present limitations, such as lack of clarity and omission of key aspects. This emphasizes the need to update national guidelines and train health professionals to ensure evidence-based complementary feeding, adapted to the cultural context and accessible to families.
