Importance of laboratory diagnosis in Toxoplasma Gondii infections

Toxoplasma gondii is a globally distributed protozoan that affects humans and animals, with potential complications in pregnant women, neonates, and individuals with a weakened immune system. Laboratory diagnosis is key for accurate identification and timely intervention. Serological tests allow the detection of specific antibodies and are useful in population screening. Meanwhile, molecular techniques offer high sensitivity and specificity for detecting T. gondii DNA, distinguishing active from chronic infections. The combined use of diagnostic tests improves accuracy and optimizes clinical decision-making, reducing associated morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, laboratory diagnosis plays a crucial role in epidemiological surveillance, gathering transmission patterns and strengthening prevention and treatment strategies, significantly reducing the disease burden on public health systems.
