Management of hazardous waste generated in public health Centers in the Southern Urban Area of Quevedo

Abstract

This study analyzes the comprehensive management of hazardous waste in public health centers in the southern urban area of the Quevedo canton. Surveys were conducted with 58 workers, and the data were processed using SPSS V.25 software. The results indicated that 93.10% of respondents were aware of Ministerial Agreement 323, while 86.21% stated that they do not transport healthcare waste in situ using container carts. The cross-tabulation analysis showed that both final storage and in situ transportation of waste are carried out using these containers. Inferential testing did not show a statistically significant relationship between injuries sustained during waste handling and participation in seminars on associated risks (Pearson’s Chi-square 0.587; p<0.05). The quantification and characterization of waste revealed an average daily rate of 0.58 kg of infectious biological waste and 0.25 kg of sharp objects at the urban health center of Quevedo, which had the highest waste generation compared to other centers. The implementation of a comprehensive action plan is recommended to optimize waste management, reduce risks, and minimize the impact on public health.
