Abstract

Extracranial germ cell tumors encompass a wide variety of neoplasms, predominantly affecting young women, with ovarian cancer being one of the leading causes of mortality. Ovarian teratomas are the most common and are classified into mature and immature types. Early diagnosis is crucial due to the insidious progression of malignant teratomas. While ultrasound is useful for identifying mature teratomas, immature ones present diagnostic challenges due to their variable composition. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are key tools for assessing the internal structure and possible spread of these tumors. This study highlights the importance of intratumoral calcifications as biomarkers for distinguishing between mature and immature teratomas. Through the analysis of a clinical case, differences in the distribution and morphology of calcifications are evident, enabling a more accurate classification of teratomas and aiding in surgical planning. The findings support the use of CT to enhance differential diagnosis and therapeutic selection in patients with ovarian tumors.
