Kidney disease is a global public health issue, affecting approximately 750 million people worldwide. The prevalence of the disease varies significantly, as do its detection and treatment methods. The protein/creatinine ratio test measures the amount of protein in the urine relative to the level of creatinine. These tests are essential for the early detection of kidney problems and other medical conditions. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the protein/creatinine ratio in random urine samples as a diagnostic tool for kidney disease in patients treated at the “Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security in Manta Hospital.” The sample included a total of 200 individuals, ranging in age from 50 to 91 years. The results revealed that a significant percentage of the patients who underwent the test had elevated protein/creatinine levels in their urine. In conclusion, the findings indicate a high prevalence of renal abnormalities among patients at the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security in Manta Hospital, reflected in elevated protein levels and protein/creatinine ratios, while most had creatinine levels within the normal range. These results highlight the importance of using the protein/creatinine ratio as a diagnostic tool for early detection and appropriate clinical follow-up.
