Anemia and renal dysfunction in hypertensive patients treated at the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute Jipijapa

Anemia is characterized as a disorder in which the number of red blood cells, or hemoglobin, in the blood is compromised and lower than normal. Hemoglobin is the iron-rich protein, and its main function is to transport oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. On the other hand, renal dysfunction refers to kidney failure, to the point that a person would not survive without dialysis or a kidney transplant. The objective of the research was to identify cases of anemia and renal dysfunction in hypertensive patients treated at the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute Jipijapa. The methodology was descriptive, cross-sectional, and retrospective, and a total of 311 hypertensive patients were studied. The results showed that 18.33% (n=57) had anemia, 50.88% (n=29/57) had normochromic microcytic anemia, and 49.12% (n=26/57) had normochromic normocytic anemia. Mild renal dysfunction occurred in 95.2% (n=60) and moderate renal dysfunction in 4.8% (n=3/63). It was concluded that both anemia and renal dysfunction are common in people with hypertension individually, and that one pathology does not necessarily lead to the other.
