Abstract

Parasitic infections are a significant public health challenge, especially in vulnerable communities such as rural areas. This study aimed to identify the presence of parasitic infections in residents of the Camarones site in the Chone canton. An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, non-experimental, and prospective study was conducted, considering a total of 103 residents belonging to the site. The results show that 24.7% of the residents of the Camarones site in the Chone canton had parasitic infections, in which monoparasitism predominated (100%). The Blastocystis hominis parasite was the most frequent group in the population (60.7%), followed by the Entamoeba complex (39.3%). Additionally, it was revealed that the Blastocystis hominis parasite was much more predominant in males compared to the Entamoeba complex, which predominates in females. In contrast, it was found that both Blastocystis hominis and the Entamoeba Complex were more prevalent among the 38-55 age group. It is concluded that parasitic infections are a health problem affecting the residents of the Camarones site, thus underscoring the importance of implementing parasitic infection prevention and control programs focusing on the most vulnerable populations.
