Cystatin C in kidney dysfunction and identification of risk factors in people aged 40 to 44 years

Abstract

Elevated cystatin C a critical indicator in accurately reflecting renal function or the presence of impairment, surpassing other traditional markers such as creatinine. The objective was to assess the usefulness of cystatin C in renal dysfunction and identify risk factors. An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional methodology was used; the population was adults aged 40 to 44 years, and the target group was 51 patients. The relative risk test identified three statistically significant factors related to renal dysfunction: age over 55 years 8.33 (95% CI: 3.934–17.652), presence of protein in urine 4.70 (95% CI: 1.302–16.961), and presenting kidney disease and acute kidney failure 1.167 (95% CI: 1.041–1.308). Blood sample results for cystatin C showed mostly normal values (88.2%), and elevated values in 11.8%. Kidney function was normal in 86.3% of patients, with kidney damage in 11.8% and decreased mean levels in 2%. The chi-square test showed a significant association (p=0.011) for age over 55 and the presence of protein in the urine (p=0.028). It was concluded that risk factors for this type of kidney damage are present, with a small number of patients with this degree of impairment. More rigorous monitoring is required to rule out kidney dysfunction.
