Abstract

Insulin is a key hormone in glucose metabolism, being its main regulator, in patients with diabetes, a condition called insulin resistance occurs, which leads to insufficient insulin production and an increase in blood glucose levels, the homeostatic model assessment index for insulin resistance is a diagnostic method used to estimate insulin resistance based on calculations of fasting glucose and insulin levels, being a key factor for the early detection and progression of diabetes and its complications. The objective of the research was to analyze the homeostatic model assessment index for insulin resistance as a method of evaluating insulin resistance in diabetic patients. The methodology was a descriptive and cross-sectional field study using the database of patients treated at the Liberlab clinical laboratory, in addition to bibliographic studies from the last five years in databases such as Google Scholar, Pubmedic and Bvsalud where research at the national level is evidenced. As a result, the study population had high levels of glycemia, insulin, and a homeostatic model assessment index for insulin resistance. In conclusion, the homeostatic model assessment index for insulin resistance is useful for diagnosing and monitoring insulin resistance in patients with diabetes mellitus in the La Libertad population. It is considered a presumptive and preventive diagnostic method for patients with genetic predisposition or prediabetes
