Abstract

Renal dysfunction refers to a decrease in the kidneys' ability to filter and eliminate waste from the body, which can lead to the accumulation of toxins and fluids. This condition often goes unnoticed in its early stages, and the use of biomarkers such as Cystatin C aids in diagnosis. The research aimed to analyze the risk factors associated with kidney dysfunction in residents aged 25 to 59 years in the city of Jipijapa. The study was descriptive, cross-sectional, and quantitative in nature, linked to a university research project on kidney dysfunction. Among the findings, high blood pressure and overweight or obesity were identified as the main risk factors for kidney dysfunction. Regarding cystatin C levels, 96% of the study population had normal values, and minor alterations were detected in 4% of women. Finally, a statistically significant association was found between cystatin C and medical history such as high blood pressure and overweight or obesity. In conclusion, although most participants showed adequate renal function, some clinical factors were associated with early alterations, highlighting the importance of preventive monitoring, even in apparently healthy young populations.
