Perinatal outcomes in pregnant adolescents an analysis based on primary care data

Adolescent pregnancy in District 13D06 of Manabí, Ecuador, is a public health problem associated with high perinatal risks and socioeconomic inequalities. In this cross-sectional quantitative correlational study conducted between January and April 2024, 49 pregnant women aged 13 to 19 years attended in primary health centers were included, using census sampling and a validated questionnaire to collect data on prematurity, growth restriction, low birth weight and perinatal mortality. The findings revealed that adolescents aged 18 to 19 years had a higher incidence of intrauterine growth restriction (17.1 %), prematurity (11.4 %), low birth weight (22.9 %) and perinatal mortality (5.7 %), in contrast to those under 17 years of age with no cases of IUGR or mortality. These results, with international evidence, suggest that biological maturity and maternal nutritional status influence adverse outcomes and support the need for differentiated protocols according to chronological age. It is recommended to strengthen prenatal control, nutritional interventions and multicenter studies that include biopsychosocial variables to optimize the care of adolescent pregnant women.
