Abstract

This study addresses the histological evaluation of the tissue microbiome, an emerging field that integrates histology with molecular microbiology to understand the influence of microbial communities in tissues, especially in chronic diseases such as cancer. The objective was to determine the impact of this evaluation on clinical samples and to identify the most frequent histological techniques. The methodology was based on a systematic review of the literature in databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Elsevier, and Web of Science, covering articles published between 2009 and 2025 in Spanish and English. Among the most relevant findings, it was found that conventional stains (55%) are the basis for general identification, while immunohistochemistry (40%) and 16S rRNA sequencing (25%) are crucial for the specific detection and molecular characterization of the microbiome in tissues, including the identification of distinctive tissue microbiomes in cancer. The study concluded that a multidisciplinary approach is essential to identify these complex interactions and improve therapeutic strategies.
