Demographic characteristics of patients with anemia treated at the Jipijapa Health Center

Abstract

Anemia is a condition that occurs when hemoglobin concentration is lower than normal. When levels are low, oxygen cannot be transported to organs and tissues. It mainly affects women and children. The study aimed to determine to determine the demographic characteristics of patients with anemia treated at the Jipijapa Health Center. A descriptive, retrospective, non-experimental, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was conducted on a total of 2,998 patients. The results showed a predominance of females (77.3%) compared to males (22.7%), with the condition being more frequent in those aged 26 years (36.2%). In the descriptive analysis, hemoglobin ranged from 5.4 to a maximum of 32.3 g/dL, while hematocrit varied from 18.4% to 90.7%. On the other hand, there was a low frequency of anemia (14.3%), with hematocrit showing similar data (17.7%). Using Pearson's chi-square test, hematocrit and hemoglobin showed a significant correlation with respect to sex and age (p=<.001).  In conclusion, the high prevalence is associated with a pattern where women receive more medical attention, and this frequency may be related to the fact that this group is more prone to this pathology.
