Complicaciones neurológicas en pacientes con hiponatremia en el Hospital General del Guasmo Sur en el período 2020-2022

Resumen

Introducción: la hiponatremia es una alteración hidroelectrolítica causada por concentraciones séricas de sodio menor a 135 mmol/L. Lo que conlleva a una sintomatología clínica variada, desde leves hasta graves, incluso causando complicaciones neurológicas y/o la muerte, asociándose a un aumento de la morbimortalidad y estancia hospitalaria. Objetivo: describir las complicaciones neurológicas en pacientes con hiponatremia en el Hospital General del Guasmo Sur en el período 2020 – 2022. Materiales y métodos: estudio de nivel descriptivo, observacional, retrospectivo de corte transversal. Se estudiaron pacientes con hiponatremia que debutaron con complicaciones neurológicas durante su estadía en el Hospital de estudio. Se realizaron medidas de resumen y de dispersión para el análisis de variables de carácter cuantitativa, tales como media, mediana y moda, así como varianza y desviación estándar. Para las variables cualitativas trabajó con frecuencia y porcentaje. Resultados: de 99 pacientes, las secuelas neurológicas que se presentaron fueron hemorragias (n=99,22,0%), convulsiones (n=99, 53,5%), afasia (n=99,45,5%), parálisis (n=99;22,2%), deterioro cognitivo (n=99,75,8%), coma (n=99,4%) y por último muerte (n=99,13,1%), es decir, que la complicación neurológica más frecuente fue el deterioro cognitivo. Mientras más bajo sea el valor mayor es el número de estancia hospitalaria. Por otro lado, la diabetes mellitus debuta con más casos de deterioro cognitivo que es la complicación neurológica más frecuente encontrada en nuestro estudio. Conclusiones: La manifestación más común de este trastorno hidroelectrolítico es la alteración del estado mental, la cual puede progresar y producir edema cerebral complicándose con accidentes cerebrovasculares, afectando mayormente a mujeres y pacientes mayores de 65 años.
