Implementation of accessibility in progressive web apps (PWAs): challenges, techniques and benefits in state Universities of Manabí Ecuador

Abstract

In the era of global digitalization, Progressive Web Apps (PWA) have emerged as an innovative solution by combining the accessibility of web applications. This article focuses on the implementation of accessibility and usability of PWAs in two state universities in Manabí, Ecuador. A mixed approach is used that combines qualitative and quantitative methods. The results reveal that most students find PWAs easy to use and accessible, although they lack knowledge about specific accessibility features. On the other hand, teachers recognize the effectiveness of PWAs in teaching and have greater awareness of the importance of accessibility. However, face challenges in integrating these technologies in the classroom. The triangulation of data shows a positive assessment of PWAs by both groups, students and teachers. However, the need for more robust training and awareness programs in accessibility is highlighted, both for students and teachers, to maximize the potential of PWAs in the educational environment. This study highlights the importance of improving education in digital technologies and accessibility in the university context to fully take advantage of the advantages that PWAs can offer, ensuring an inclusive and effective learning environment.
