Mathematics in poetry: rhythm, meter and numerical sequences in the construction of verse

Abstract

The analysis of the connection between mathematics and poetry revealed how certain mathematical principles impacted the structure and rhythm of verse over time. Various poetic movements were studied to identify the presence of metrical patterns based on numerical sequences, proportions, and symmetries. In traditional poetry, it was found that meter, comprised of rhythmic feet such as iambic and dactylic, followed mathematical rules that ensured the poem's musicality. Likewise, cases were examined where the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio influenced the arrangement of verses and the organization of stanzas. Throughout history, numerous poets employed mathematical concepts, either deliberately or intuitively, to structure their works. Furthermore, the authors analyzed how some contemporary authors incorporated numerical patterns and fractal structures into their compositions, exploring new forms of poetic expression. The results demonstrated that mathematics not only provided precision tools for verse construction but also opened up new creative opportunities in poetry. This study demonstrated that the interrelationship between the two disciplines played a crucial role in the evolution of poetry throughout different literary eras.
