Microbiological study of drinking water quality in the Febres Cordero parish, South Sector of the City of Guayaquil

Abstract

This article analyzes the quality of drinking water in the Febres Cordero parish, considering both laboratory analyses and user perceptions through surveys. Physicochemical and microbiological analyses were conducted at different water distribution points, such as the avenue between 29th and 30th streets, the Escuela Fiscal Mixta Said Hanna, and the "La Laguna" Health Center. Laboratory results showed that parameters including free residual chlorine, nitrates, turbidity, pH, and heavy metals (mercury, cadmium, and lead) complied with the permissible limits established by Ecuadorian regulations, except for fecal coliforms, Cryptosporidium, and Giardia, indicating that the water is not safe for consumption. Additionally, the results from the user surveys revealed a negative perception regarding the reliability of the drinking water service. Although the water quality meets acceptable levels in some laboratory parameters, users perceive the service as not entirely reliable, which aligns with previous studies that highlight the relationship between perceived water quality and user satisfaction. These findings emphasize the importance of not only meeting technical water quality standards but also addressing users' concerns and perceptions to improve trust in the service, as user satisfaction is a key factor that should be considered in future research. The results obtained are valuable for local authorities, who can take measures to strengthen service quality.
