The incidences of filler words within expository speech

At the educational level, when high school students deliver expository speeches, they must refer to the interlocutor clearly, fluently, and with appropriate vocabulary. However, among second-year high school students at one specific educational unit, filler words are used inadvertently and excessively, which interferes with the clarity of the information. The research objective is to analyze the impact of filler words in the oral discourse of second-year high school students. To this end, a quantitative approach is used: descriptive-cross-sectional field research, with theoretical, empirical, and mathematical-statistical methods. The techniques employed are systematic observation and a survey, where a checklist is administered to 12 high school students and a questionnaire is administered to a Language and Literature teacher. The most commonly used filler words are "Well," "Uh," "I mean," and "Do you understand me?", which is consistent with the teacher's perception. The significant presence of filler words in high school students' expository speech demonstrates a lack of preparation, poor vocabulary, confidence, and expressive fluency, which negatively affects clarity and cohesion.
