Abstract

This research determined the impact of memes on the spelling of students in upper basic general education (UBE) to improve their writing skills. The problem stemmed from poor writing skills related to spelling rules, which are influenced by exposure to social media, leading to a deficit in the application of grammatical rules. The main objective was to determine the impact of reading memes on students' spelling skills by applying research tools to improve their writing skills. The research approach was quantitative with a descriptive-statistical design, taking a sample of 25 students from the 8th grade of the UBE (Grabriela Mistral) Educational Unit. The technique used was a clear and concise test, which was validated by five teachers as a research tool. The results revealed that the most common spelling mistakes are abbreviations such as "x q" and "q-k," and expressions such as "politsia" and "amix," which demonstrates a simplification in spelling. It is concluded that reading memes impacts the spelling practice of 8th grade students.
