Abstract

The normal sleep cycle controlled by the circadian rhythms of the central clock has an intimate relationship with the correct functioning of the body systems, one of them is the regulation of metabolism, there is evidence that the interruption of sleep as in the case of shift workers affects the metabolism of glucose, lipids and insulin resistance being a risk factor for developing diabetes. The objective was to associate sleep/wake cycle disturbances occurring in shift workers with increased insulin resistance in adults. Electronic databases such as Pubmed, Scielo, Science Direct, Scopus and Web of Science; electronic books and the Wiley Online Library were used; choosing those carried out between the years 2011 and 2021, in English and Spanish, and only in humans. From a total of 222 articles, according to the eligibility criteria, eight cross-sectional and two randomized crossover articles were chosen. We found a medium evidence that associates sleep disturbances occurring in shift workers, in a higher proportion in night shift workers, with decreased sensitivity and increased insulin resistance.
