Nutrition and poverty in urban areas

Abstract

Urban areas face a complex and multifaceted problem because poor nutrition and poverty are closely related. While there is greater food availability in urban areas due to the concentration of markets and supermarkets, there are also high rates of food insecurity, and the dynamics of the urban environment can exacerbate nutritional disparities between different socioeconomic groups. Due to the high cost of fresh, nutritious food, many low-income urban residents struggle to access a healthy, balanced diet. As a result, they often rely on less healthy, but less expensive options. In addition, the lack of grocery stores with fresh produce in impoverished neighborhoods further worsens the situation. Lack of nutrition education can also make it difficult for people to make informed dietary decisions and adopt healthier eating practices. Urban poverty creates a vicious cycle in which unfavorable socioeconomic conditions lead to inadequate nutrition, which then has an effect on health and well-being and makes it difficult for people to escape poverty.
