Effectiveness of virtual reality in non-pharmacological pain management during childbirth

Pain management during childbirth is a challenge in modern obstetrics. While pharmacological methods, such as epidural analgesia, are effective, they can cause adverse effects and increase the medicalization of childbirth. In this context, virtual reality (VR) has emerged as an innovative alternative for pain control through cognitive distraction and sensory modulation. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of VR as a non-pharmacological method for pain management during childbirth through a systematic review of the scientific literature. A search was conducted in databases such as PubMed, Cochrane, and Elsevier, selecting studies published between 2019 and 2024. The results show that VR significantly reduces pain perception, decreases maternal anxiety, and improves satisfaction with the childbirth experience. Additionally, some studies suggest that it may reduce labor duration and the need for pharmacological analgesia. It is concluded that VR is a safe and effective option, although further studies are required for its large-scale clinical implementation.
