Abstract

Inclusive education requires teachers capable of responding to student diversity through professional competencies that promote participation, learning, and retention under equitable conditions. This study aimed to analyze the competencies required by primary school teachers to develop inclusive practices, as well as the main challenges they face and their training needs. A narrative literature review was conducted, using a qualitative, descriptive, and interpretive approach, by consulting scientific publications from January 2020 to July 2026 in recognized academic databases. The information was examined through narrative synthesis and thematic content analysis and organized into three categories: teaching competencies, challenges for inclusion, and training needs. The results showed that the profile of an inclusive teacher integrates ethical and attitudinal, pedagogical and didactic, evaluative, communicative and socio-emotional, technological, and reflective competencies. Limitations were identified related to insufficient teacher training, rigid curricula, resource scarcity, excessive workload, attitudinal barriers, and weak institutional coordination. It is concluded that effective inclusion requires comprehensive teacher training, pedagogical support, collaborative work, and institutional conditions that guarantee the participation and learning of all students.
