The communicative approach includes a cluster of competencies that favor the creation of academic texts in the educational field, with emphasis on higher sublevel instruction. In this framework, this work is associated with the research project: “Improvement of pedagogical practices in educational institutions in the southern area of Manabí”; and exposes the multidirectional interrelation between communicative competencies and academic production. For this purpose, a qualitative-quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive methodology was used, which, mediated by a cross-sectional design, allowed reflection on the problem raised. Consequently, the selected theoretical level methods allowed the incursion into the implications of the object of study; At an empirical level, through the application of surveys to a non-probabilistic sample, they favored the completion of the diagnosis that gathers the perspectives and experiences of authorities, teachers in the area of Language and Literature and students; and mathematical statistics, governed by the use of the Microsoft Excel program, structured the data collected minimizing the risk of contamination. The results show that there are currently insufficiencies in the lack of knowledge of basic writing strategies, due to social, environmental and personal deficiencies that limit their development. The need to identify proposals aimed at the development of competencies framed in the new literacies in academic writing is important.
