Abstract

The present investigation reveals the results of a study carried out, aimed at solving the following research problem: How to develop basic cognitive skills in the children of the San José “La Salle” Educational Unit? and its objective was to develop a system of exercises to develop basic cognitive skills in students; For which the researchers relied on a quantitative research approach and used theoretical and empirical research methods that served to develop the system of exercises to develop the cognitive ability to solve mathematical problems in elementary school students, which responds to the required needs of the teaching-learning process; and it was applied taking into consideration the brain exercises technique that combines physical and mental strategies, allowing students to activate neurons for better learning and the problem-solving methodology that helped understand the steps to follow with the assistance of the exercise method; The system of exercises applied to second-year basic school students was an excellent option to develop basic cognitive skills, especially the ability to solve mathematical problems, therefore, the results obtained allowed us to verify that basic cognitive skills can be developed when the process is structured didactically based on scientifically proven theory.
