Abstract

The purpose of this article is to assess the current state of development of cognitive skills in mathematics learning in seventh-grade students of Secondary Basic Education. The article is developed from a quantitative research approach and uses specific tasks and exercises that require the use of specific cognitive skills such as: working memory, attention and logical reasoning and methods of observing students while they perform mathematical tasks and error analysis to identify patterns and understand the underlying causes. The results obtained allowed us to conclude that: there is a significant variability in the level of development of cognitive skills among 7th grade students. Cognitive skills, such as logical reasoning, working memory, attention and reading comprehension, influence students' performance in solving mathematical problems. Reading comprehension plays a crucial role in solving mathematical problems. In this sense, difficulties in interpreting the statement of a problem limit the student's ability to solve it, even if he or she has the necessary calculation skills. The results of the study highlight the need to adapt teaching to the individual needs of students, considering their different levels of cognitive development.
